Dear Monic,Good thoughts to you, Willem and Nicky.
Thursday was our (Small Change) 1st day feeding the children at Lukhanyo. After a hectic week of telephone calls and driving to Cape Town, negotiations with dozens of people. Thursday finally arrived. I delivered a car load of goodies on Wednesday afternoon. The guys were over the moon with excitement. I popped in at Lukhanyo at about 1pm on Thursday just to check that everything was on track. I had to attend a school function as well. At 4pm I went back for the big event. Precious was the person in charge of cooking and the “Minister of food serving”. There were hundreds of children. It was a most humbling experience and brought a tear to my eyes. There were children from the age of 2 years to 19 years. They were arranged in age order with the youngest being fed first. Everything was very orderly managed by the bigger girls and boys. Sydwell, Johnson, Wellington and Ayanda were guarding the proceedings with great pride. They were like fathers who had just given birth to new babies. The faces of the children when they saw the hot food were the most heart warming thing to witness. The 3 large shiny pots and gas cooker made for much talk and excitement. I fed some babies and helped to collect all the dirty spoons from the children. We managed to feed 280 people. We had to close the doors when the pots were empty because the line just would not stop. I tried to capture it on camera, but the pictures do not do justice to the event. I think we are going to have even more children next week. Please publish these pictures on your website so that the donors can see what we doing with their money. All the best, Shanaz Effendi. 28 Juli 2009 |
